Out With the Old and in With the New – What to do with your child’s outgrown clothes.
School is out! Hooray! Well at least my little guy is excited. He is thrilled to get started with summer activities including, swimming, martial arts camp and travel.
A funny thing happened in the past month or so, he had yet another growth spurt. Many of his school pants are now high -waters and a little snug in the waist.
So we headed to our favorite local stores to get the next size up. On returning home I noticed his drawers were looking a little stuffed. So today I am sifting through the closet and the drawers and releasing the outgrown clothes and adding the new ones.
Now what to do with all the outgrown clothes?
HAND DOWN
Well Little Guy is my last baby so I cannot hand down the outgrown clothes to anyone in my immediate family and all my other relatives live to far away and only have really little ones at home anyway. But that would be my first choice.
DONATE
Therefore, I will be donating all of his outgrown clothing to my favorite charity.
I would never consider throwing them in the trash. I believe that waste is wrong. I think Mother Teresa said it best:
There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use.

Of course if the item is so used that it is covered in holes I could cut it up into a rag. But lately he is growing so fast that the clothes are barely worn before he needs the next size up.
In a nutshell, what to do with outgrown clothes:
- Donate
- Hand Down
- Cut into rags if it is past the donating stage and put it in the ragbag.
Simple Daily Challenge for today is to remove all outgrown clothing from your child’s wardrobe and choose which ones to hand down, which to donate and which to add to your rag bag.
p.s. Have you ever tried explaining high-waters to a seven-year old. Little Guy could care less if his pants are too short. *sigh*

It is definately the season for purging from the winter and all the school papers that the kids couldnt live without. I never throw out anything useable either! When donating… even school social workers and local churches will welcome donations for families in need.

I’ve recently been using my son’s outgrown clothes and altering them to make them girly for my soon-to-be daughter. Still a hand-me-down, but a sewing project as well 🙂

We’ve also done the first two options. I am the only girl, so anything of mine that I outgrow or don’t need either goes to my girl cousins or goes in the donate pile (when the pile is big enough, my mom bags the items and takes them to either the local food and clothing bank or a store like Value Village). My youngest brother got my other brother’s hand-me-downs but after him, his stuff has gone the way of mine: to boy cousins or to the donate pile. It’s a nice way to do things 🙂
