31 Day Clutter Crusade Day 10 – Books

C.S. Lewis quote You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.
Today we are working on our book stash.  This is an ultra sensitive area for so many people now with the dawn of the Kindle and Ibooks and the dinosaur driven demise of the local bookstore.  We have one Barnes and Noble left in our area and I hungrily go there when I can and gobble up the visuals of the stacks and stacks of books trying to ignore the fact that the bottom floor is now filled with toys and knickknacks for the consumer.

And yet, we still have only so much real estate in our homes to hoard things, even books!

I will tell you honestly, that most children books I am storing properly for my grandchildren and I hope my boys do the same thing. I hope to have a little library for when they come to visit in our home so they can sit and soak up a good book in a big comfy chair. Most will tell you that they will never stop producing paper books for children, but most would have also told you that humans could never travel to Mars and now it is trickling in the news quite often and we just might see it happen in this century!

So what to keep and what to let go? It is really up to you and what you feel are the classics and what you and you children and your children’s children will enjoy at some point in the future.

My How to Declutter Book Tips

  1. I tend to let go of trendy cookbooks, romance novels and cheesy poetry books. I keep historical non-fiction, classic cookbooks, classic fiction, modern classic fiction ( Harry Potter for example) and books that deal with my job that are current. ( There is no need to keep vintage computer books unless you are a collector.) The books to keep are the ones that have meaning to you!
  2. Before you donate a book make sure you ask your children or signficant other if that book is a keeper.  Remember, some of these books will never be in a print again and you will pay a mint on Ebay or Amazon to replace them.
  3. Contact your local library for book donation days so that you know the books will go to a true book lover if you do decide to donate.

Let’s Get To It:

Spend 10 minutes only going through your book stash and deciding whether to keep it, donate it or toss it.  Just 10 minutes! This could easily turn into an all day project and that is not what our clutter crusade is about!

1. Keep it – You will know almost immediately if it is a keeper, if you have one second of doubt about donating a book…. it is a keeper. We are talking about books here not pizza boxes or a coffee cups with ” I Love My Teacher” logos.

2. Toss it- If it is beyond repair or completely chewed up by ” Frankie the Rascal Terrier” then just toss it in the trash. ( Wait, first check to see if ir was sign by someone face, then make the decision)

3. Donate it- If you feel you or anyone in your family cannot benefit from this book any longer, then please put it in a donation box and donate it to the local library or perhaps a school.  It is also possible to re-sell these items on Ebay or at a garage sale if you have the time and energy.”

*Remember these are my suggestions for the process, you have to make donation and tossing decision about your things completely on your own.

That is it!  10 minutes and you are done.
Question: What books are near and dear to your heart? I would love to hear from you in the comment section!
