Slow Cooker Mashed Potatoes

slow-cooker mashed potatoes - mommacan.com

Nothing soothes my Southern palate like a scoop of mashed potatoes made from scratch. The ideal mashed potato is smooth with just enough chunk left to create a hearty dish.  Leaving the skins on the potatoes make it even heartier and creates a beautiful setting alongside your favorite fried chicken recipe or secret family recipe for meatloaf.  To be honest, I can’t think of a meal in my traditional arsenal that cannot be complemented with a yummy scoop of mashed potatoes.

This recipe is fantastic because it has the same elements of stove-top cooking without the fuss.  I use an oblong slow-cooker with a warm setting and take care not to overcook the potatoes.  Warming the milk before adding it the to pot helps to keep down the gooey texture of the dish and salting to taste is an absolute must when cooking with a slow-cooker. I like this one!

I also simplify the mashing with either a potato masher for chunkier potato or an immersion blender for really smooth mashed potatoes.   I like this immersion blender and this potato smasher.

Then I top off the dish with either fresh ground pepper and dill, or chives.

  1. My Hubby makes the best mashed potatoes. I would never have thought of cooking them in a slow cooker though.. I remember my mom slaving at the stove cooking me homemade mashed taters to put some solid food in me when I was sick and nauseous. It was the only thing to settle my stomach and it still does!

    1. I love all potatoes, does he add garlic or something fun? I always thought you could add crumbled sausage the the leftover, a bit of flower and make some pretty darn good potato pancakes the next day.

      1. Yea, me too. He laughs when I microwave a baked potato for a snack! No, just doesn’t. We never have left over mashed potatoes LOL! We eat them all
