Take Two for Cosmetic Clean-Up

organized makeup

In the busy day of a mom’s life we often scramble to put on cosmetics then jump on that crazy train ride of the morning rush. This usually means that any kind of cosmetic care is left to the bathroom elves. And heaven knows, those little guys are not dependable.

I read a bit on-line and it seems that mascara tends to get nasty and icky the quickest with liquid make-up bases and any kind of cosmetic gels running a close second.

Today please take two-minutes to toss out the old stuff and write down what you need to replace. And while you are tossing the old stuff toss out the ugly stuff as well. We all make crazy decisions at make-up counters and drug stores when we are in a big mom hurry or when we are just trying to create some kind of miracle due to lack of sleep. Don’t let that stuff make you feel bad or wasteful just throw it out.

Here is a simple rule of thumb on cosmetics to play it safe, but you know I am no expert, I am just a crazy busy mom.

  1. Mascara – 3 months or if it smells funny.
  2. Liquid eyeliners, and concealers – 12 months or if it smells funny
  3. Liquid Make-up – 12-18 months or if it smells funny.
  4. All powdered based products can be kept up to two years if they were not contaminated with the above products.
  5. Lip sticks – two years if applied with a brush or finger.
  6. Make-up sponges – wash them everyday and to play it safe use a new one each week.
  7. Make-up brushes- wash once a month or again, if they smell funny.

Taking care of ourselves includes taking care of what we put on our face and especially near our precious eyes. And you are so worth taking care of moms!

( this is a repost, because we need to do this challenge 2 times per year)

  1. Since I work from home I often do not wear makeup.. so my makeup tends to last me a long time. I did not realize mascara went bad that quickly! Wow.. I can have a tube for a year! I have never had makeup smell funny though… really, what kind of smells?

  2. You are so right, we really do need to take care of ourselves in order to be the best mom’s to our children. It does take a village to raise a mom, I completely agree! I’m pretty good about cleaning out my cosmetics, especially the mascaras. Even though I stay at home with my kids, I have always liked wearing some make-up, not nearly the amount when I worked in an office, but enough to make me feel polished. So great to find your site on voiceBoks! I’m happily following you now!

  3. I so need to do this more often. I’m always getting free samples that I never use…but Keep for maybe someday.

    1. I handed mine off yesterday to the the food and shelter group at church. The homeless cannot share shampoos and things so they need to small versions. They have a hot meal and a warm place to sleep at different churches in each community out here.

  4. This is so important! My mom got a serious eye infection from using old eye makeup (she would NEVER throw hers out ever–she’d use it until it was gone) and 20 years later, she’s still dealing with the after effects. Saving a little bit of money is NOT worth your health!
