The Best New Year’s Recipes – Guacamole

New Year's Recipes

I am a Tennessee girl in a California town, when I plan my New Year’s eats it is not difficult at all.  We always had the same things every single year at my momma’s house and they were all pretty darn good.  However, I do add a dash of California when I can because I did marry into this state and have learned to really love some of its cuisine.  For example: Every Christmas Eve we enjoy guacamole and chips as an appetizer before dinner.  I am half Latina and had never even thought of eating avocados on Christmas.  We always had what I felt was traditional American fixing alongside our roast turkey and ham.

As a matter of fact, guacamole shows up at New Year’s Eve as well, and that is okay with me as long as I have the right cocktail alongside it I could eat it for every special occasion.  My husband’s family buys some kind of instant mix at the grocery store to add to the mashed avocado, this was perplexing to me at first but I learned pretty quickly that they do not like to shy to far away from the packet flavored tradition so I keep my momma-mouth shut.  When I was growing up we just sprinkle a little salt, squeeze of lemon and a dash of cumin if it was handy. That was all we put in avocados and simple is best in most instances.  In California, the mashed avocado is like a blank slate and anything goes!

I think my favorite recipe is bacon wrapped green beans for either holiday or any time.. With a touch of cocktail sauce, bake in oven for a while and bam! Yum.

What is also good is some rotel mixed in velvet cheese melted in microwave. Bring the chips. YUM!

  2. I didn’t know you ate guacamole for New Years! I’m going to have to steal that idea. we had to celebrate New Years late this year so my blackeyed peas are on the stove bubbling away. I added plenty of kale for luck and prosperity in 2014…
