Welcome to our first of the 12 Day Self-Care challenge, our way of preventing and conquering holiday stress.  We are booting off our building blocks today with sleep.

Moms Are Tired

  • New moms daydream of naps and full night’s rest.
  • Working moms with school children take lunch breaks in their car just to get some snooze time to drive home.
  • Stay at home moms get to carpool lane early to get their extras.

Sleep deprivation for moms has become a norm.

During the holidays, moms are busier than ever. When you add on an extra TODO list on top of the daily responsibilities, the first thing that goes is sleep and then the rest of the healthy building blocks crumble.

Moms need sleep.  To get through the holidays, we need to plan for it and it is most effective is those hours can happen at night.

ADULTS NEED 7-9 Hours of sleep per day.

Adults typically need 7-9 hours of sleep per day, and yes this includes moms. We are superheroes in the eyes of our family, but we are still human and need rest.

Creating morning and evening routines, schedule blocking, and setting a set bedtime each night are wonderful ways to plan for sleep.  Create this habit and you will be rested and ready for each day!

I know for moms of newborns this can be a challenge.  Thankfully, this is just a stage of parenting, eventually, those little ones will sleep through the night. There is no easy answer for new mommies but you can try these:

  1. Ask your partner/spouse to help you get the sleep you need. Try to come up with workable solutions together.
  2. Ask a relative or close friend to help with the baby once a week so you can catch a solid, worry-free nap.
  3. Take Turns with a close friend, whom you trust, who is also a new mommy. Who better to help you during this time, than someone experiencing the same sleep-deprived nights.

SELF-CARE CHALLENGE – SLEEP

Plan for sleep. Take a few minutes and go over your schedule to see how you can get the sleep you need each day.  Try writing out an evening routine and schedule blocking so you can get the ZZZ’s that you need.

  1. Having a set bedtime even as an adult is a must have! We go to bed at 10pm almost every night and I usually get up around 7am…give or take the couple of times hot flashes or bathroom trips wake me up 😉 I also love a nap and would take one every day if I could!!

  2. Scheduling sleep is brilliant and difficult. Personally I struggle with my sleep pattern and its a huge challenge to give up my late hour quiet time for much needed sleep. Scheduling it may help.
