Scrubbing the Tub in a Puddle of Tears

I remember your very first bath. I was terrified, so your grandparents came over to help. You were so adorable and seemed to be enjoying the process. So much, in fact, you got relaxed and peed a pretty impressive arc right on to your grandpa’s chin.

I remember when you were old enough to sit up in the grown-up tub. Of course, the first thing I gave you to play with was a rubber ducky. I think all mommies look forward to singing that Rubber Ducky song from Sesame Street to their babies. (I still sing it to this day but mostly in my head)

I remember when you were old enough to take a shower all by yourself. It only took me about six months to stop banging on the door to see if you were okay.

I remember how I found out you had your first crush. Turning on the shower the room steamed up and written on the shower wall was “ I love Amy Stewart.” I cried and worried like a crazy person that day. You still chat with her on Facebook even to this day.

I remember when your baby brother was born. You were almost 16 and just a bit jealous of this surprise newcomer. On the day of his first bath, you peeked through the door and could not help yourself but had to come closer and watch. You brother promptly made his own pee arc and caught you right on your nose. What comes around goes around.

And this is what I think about when I clean the shower or the tub. There are mommy memories everywhere especially when we tidy and clean. Some make us laugh, some give us a few tears, and some are wishes for another little one to show up and make more memories.

DAILY CHALLENGE

So, grab your favorite tub cleaner, some rags and a couple of tissues and wash some tub memories. For me, 5 minutes of scrubbing brings back 24 wonderful years of memories and much more to come.

Peace to all of you,

  1. Beautifully written. I had a similar experience when I re-painted all of the little tiny handprints off of our walls a few weeks ago. I’d wanted those little smudges gone for months, but once I’d painted over them, I missed them so much…

I’m following back! Have a great night. 🙂
