Day Of The Dead Coloring Pages

These coloring pages are inspired by the El Día de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a color and meaningful Mexican holiday.  I was amazed to read through the internet how differently it is explained in several articles.  I am just going to share what I have learned through my own Mexican heritage along with a few facts.

Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos

Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos is a series of tribute days dedicated to those who have died. It is celebrated generally between Halloween, Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, and coincides with the Catholic holy days of All Saints (Nov. 1) and All Souls (Nov. 2).

Day of the Dead is actually divided into two distinct holidays, the first being Dia Los Inocentes, which is dedicated to children on Nov. 1, and Dia Los Muertos on Nov. 2, which is the actual Day of the Dead. Both days taken together are collectively referred to as the Day of the Dead, and celebrations can begin as early as Halloween (Oct. 31).

At home, we decorate our special tables in memories of our lost loved ones. I  fill bowls with oranges and sometimes have freshly baked bread on platters. We frame photos of our family members, especially of my late brother and my own Mexican grandparents.  We do not use sugar skulls because we get ants in this house! However, we do have plaster and plastic ones to decorate with as well.

Beautiful Mexican Tradition

I hope this explains it enough. This is not a scary holiday, but a day of remembrance, from a culture that has so many beautiful traditions!

Enjoy the coloring pages, which are available in our amazing  Library!   We are filing it with wonderful things for Halloween and Thanksgiving.  And it is totally free! This is the easiest way for me to share all the things I love to create!
