Setting New Year Intentions

How to create new year intentions in four easy steps.

The start of a new year is a time for setting New Year intentions, and it’s no surprise that many people set intentions for themselves. Whether you’re resolving to eat more healthily or achieve your goals at work, setting intentions can help keep you motivated towards reaching your goals. But why do we want to set these personal intentions? What do they do for us? And what can we do if our New Year’s resolutions don’t pan out? Let’s make this time of year all about a fresh start and creating new habits!

Quick Tip: Don’t let the past year be part of your New Year resolutions!

Let’s Learn the Basics of Goal Setting

Let’s start with the basics. What are resolutions? They’re goals or promises you set for yourself to achieve in the future, and they can be personal (like getting into shape) or professional (like learning a new language). Every January 1st, people make public declarations of their resolutions on social media, hoping to hold themselves accountable throughout the year.

What makes an effective resolution? The key is to keep it simple: don’t try to accomplish too much at once or set unrealistic expectations for yourself; instead, focus on one thing at a time and be patient while working toward your goal.

Why do people make New Year’s resolutions? There are several reasons we might decide to make changes in our lives—to improve our health or relationships; increase productivity at work; reduce stress levels—but ultimately most people simply want to feel better about themselves and their lives overall by setting positive intentions for what they hope will happen over the next 12 months (or however long you’re planning ahead).

Step 1 – Make a List of Goals

Let’s get started. First, you need to make a list of your goals for this year. What are all the things you want to accomplish? Write them down, and put them somewhere that they can be easily seen. Next, ask yourself if each goal is specific enough.

Can you describe exactly what it will look like when you achieve it? If not, revise your goal so that it is more detailed and measurable. Then ask yourself if each goal is realistic for where you are right now in life (not just physically). Is it too far out of reach? If so, re-write your goal until it feels attainable for where you currently stand. Finally — and most importantly — ask yourself if each goal aligns with who you really are at the core: Do these things feel like they reflect the true person inside of me? If not, then perhaps those particular goals aren’t worth pursuing; instead, focus on something else that’s more genuine or meaningful to who I am as an individual.”

Step 2 – Review You4 List

  • Review your list, highlight your most wanted achievements in the next year. Your New Year intentions may vary and may be quite lengthy, that is okay!
  • Achievable Goals! Be realistic about what you can achieve and don’t set goals that are too difficult.
  • Be specific about what exactly you aim to do and when.
  • Set deadlines for each goal, so that you know when it’s due.
  • Prioritize your goals based on their importance and how much effort they will take to achieve them, then make a plan for achieving each one in order of priority.

Step 3 – Make One A Top Priority

Step 3: Pick one thing you want to change, and make it your top priority.

You’ve already written down all the things that are important to you, so now it’s time to pick which one of those things is most important to you at this moment in time. Try saying the words out loud: “My number one goal for 2023 is…” If possible, write it down so that when you look at your list later on, it will remind you of what matters most right now.

Be realistic about what can be accomplished in a year—we can’t fix everything overnight! And if there’s anything from step 2 that’s been bothering you for longer than just a few days or weeks (like quitting smoking), then take another look at these goals and make sure they’re still relevant before deciding which one deserves top billing on this list. Once again, consider whether pursuing this new intention might take away from other important activities like spending quality time with family members or doing exercises regularly.

You can motivate yourself to make positive changes, but it takes some thought about what you really want.

You can motivate yourself to make positive changes, but it takes some thought about what you really want. Here are some thoughts on how you can do this:

  • You will find that self-motivation is much easier when your goals are clear and specific. If you want to be more positive, for example, decide on the specific behaviors or habits that will help you feel better about yourself and get more done in your day.
  • Think about how long a change might take before committing to it, so that your expectations are realistic and achievable instead of setting yourself up for failure by aiming too high (or too low).
  • Be honest with yourself when thinking through these things; if there’s something deep inside of us causing our behavior (like an underlying personality trait), we need to acknowledge it before trying to change our actions because otherwise we’ll just end up right back where we started!

That’s okay – you have time!

The new year is a great time to start fresh. Don’t be afraid if you don’t feel ready to make some big changes just yet; nobody has ever started with all their resolutions in place from day one, and that’s okay! You will get there. For now, make sure your intentions are at least somewhat specific so you can easily tell if they’ve been met or not. If you’re having trouble sticking with something like “get healthier,” break it down into smaller steps like eating more vegetables or exercising more often – this makes it easier both mentally and physically because now instead of trying not eat junk food at all times (which isn’t realistic), just think about those specific things instead.”

Ideas for the coming year and specific goals.

  1. Look at your physical health and mental health. ( What area areas you strong and what areas need a little of extra love?
  2. Use your favorite tools for goal setting! Love paper? Use a paper planner or a notebook. Dig some digital entry time? Use your cell phone or computer to create daily reminder.
  3. Consider using a short mantra to keep your focus on your new year’s goals.
  4. Listen to Deepak Chopra for meditation or use the Hallow App for some quality meditative time. Use what is in your comfort zone.
  5. Create a vision board of your big goal for the year and/or several smaller goals.
  6. Create a list of short, actionable steps you can use every single day.
  7. Celebrate all the good things in throughout the whole year. Keeping positivity flowing through different areas of your life and being thankful will just make achieving your goals in the best way.

Let’s Wrap this Up!

I hope this post has helped you think about setting some new goals. If you’re still struggling, try seeing it as a positive thing. You can motivate yourself to make positive changes, but it takes some thought about what you really want. I would recommend starting with an idea – like helping people in need or working out more often – and then coming up with concrete steps that will get you there. Some ideas might be: “I’m going to do yoga every day for 30 minutes”, while others may be more specific like “I will clean my room before dinner tonight.” Once these goals are set and written down on paper they become more manageable because we’ve taken away all the excuses not to do them! So go ahead! Have fun doing something new this year!

Happy New Year friends!
