The Great Outdoors
Be it a simple trip to the local park or a short road trip to the mountains or if you are lucky enough to live near the beach, take time this summer to get your children outside with mother nature. I imagine if your children have compiled a Summer Bucket List it is filled with trips to the museum, amusement parks, movies and other modern day entertainment wonders. And all of these things are awesome if you have the means to enjoy them.
But when I look back at my childhood my fondest memories are so simple and usually included the outdoors. Kite flying on windy days in Oklahoma, fishing with my dad in Arkansas, picnics at rest stops on family road trips and riding my bike on the dirt paths at Shelby State Park in Tennessee. All very economical and so much fun with very few photos to mark these family memories of my youth. But I can recall so many outdoor moments filled with laughter, meals of mustard and bologna sandwiches with Charles Chips and drinking an ice cold grape soda made with real sugar out of a glass bottle. I don’t need 50 shots of saved photos on Instagram or Facebook to remember bits and pieces of conversations with my brother, parents and cousins. Because at the time there was no Iphone stuck to my face ,I was living in the moment. These moments are my fondest memories.
Simple Memory Making Saturday
Take time today to hang out with mother nature with you children. Leave the camera at home or just take three photos and then pack it away. Live in the moment. Make word memories with conversation. Make creative memories by collecting leaves, shells, pinecones or sea glass and place them in a tray on the coffee table or entry way. These will be you summer moments, just waiting to be recollected with your children every time you walk by that common place.
