Ingredients

  • Spicy Seasoning is the key to this recipe. Grab a nice sized bowl and add the following ingredients:
  • Garam Masala – Garam masala is a warm and aromatic blend of spices, typically including cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, coriander, and black pepper.
  • Turkish Aleppo Pepper – Turkish Aleppo pepper, also known as Pul Biber, is a moderately spicy, slightly sweet, and fruity-flavored chili flake, commonly used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. (you can use crushed red pepper flakes, but use just a little, the heat will turn up quick)
  • Za’atar Seasoning – Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend made from dried herbs like thyme and oregano, mixed with sesame seeds, sumac, and often salt, creating a tangy, nutty, and aromatic seasoning.
  • Salt- because it is just in everything!
  • Sugar – As a southern cook, I swear by adding a little sugar love to nearly all recipes!
  • Olive Oil – This is the key ingredient to bind the spices to the crackers.
  • Crackers – I used a box of Toll House Pita Crackers, but you can use any crackers you love. Just make sure you have extra seasoning for larger boxes of crackers!

Each ingredient in this recipe is a celebration of flavor and the perfect snack anytime of the day! Are you ready to make these Masala Fire Crackers?

How To Make Spicy Masala Fire Crackers

Spice Mix Creation: In a bowl, mix the vegetable oil with spicy masala powder, Aleppo Pepper, Za’atar Seasoning, Sumac, salt. Stir until well combined.

Olive Oil in A Bag or a Bowl: Well, it is better for the planet to grab a large bowl and coat the bowl with drizzles of olive oil, but less messy to coat a 1- or 2-gallon plastic storage bag and add the crackers and seasoning. You pick your way! I used a gallon Ziplock Bag because I thought I might accidentally rub my eyes and that can really hurt! So, if you are using the bowl mixing method, take care not to touch your face while mixing! It will burn like the dickens. So, pick your method and add oil to the bowl or large plastic food storage bag and add the crackers and seasoning. Gently toss until fully coated with all but two tablespoons of seasoning. Set this aside to add a sprinkle at the end of the baking. Not let all that spicy goodness marry with the crackers with the tips below.

Like any good Southern Mama recipe, there are last-minute options and slow option to this recipe. But it is a simple choice!

How much time do you have?

If you have time to let the crackers absorb all the goodness overnight, then make them the night before for extra oomph in every crunchy bite.

If you are a last-minute Sally kind of cook or just want a quick, flavorful cracker to serve on a charcuterie board, then just let the crackers rest in the seasoning for 15minutes to an hour!

The total time is up to you!

  • Cooling: Allow the crackers to cool on the baking sheet. They will crisp up as they cool.
  • Serving & Storage: Serve the spicy masala crackers at room temperature. Store any leftovers in an airtight container to keep them crispy for up to a week!

Recipe Variations For Spicy Masala Fire Crackers

A great recipe always has a few variations pop up in your creative cooking mind and this recipe is no different. It is always a good idea to start the easy way by following the directions for the first time. But a great snack screams for more! I mean, we all know the Lays Potato Chip commercials, “No One Can Eat Just One” from our youth. This savory cracker recipe has basic ingredients from my kitchen, but adding some garlic salt instead of salt or chili powder to replace the Aleppo pepper, and even a few crush cumin seeds would be amazing!

Try using oyster crackers and serve with your favorite soup. Use larger club crackers and serve with cheesy dips and my favorite. Look for diamond shapes or star shapes when shopping for the best crackers for a special holiday.
