I remember as a child the first thing my mom did every morning was open all the curtains to let the sun shine in all through the house. She would be dressed in a housecoat wearing her slippers. All this occurred while the first pot of coffee was percolating. She never really spoke, just a quiet goodbye to my father as he left for work, coffee thermos in hand. In the seventies we did not have drive-thru coffee- houses.
At some point after her first cup of coffee mom would finally wake-up. In the summer time after this occurred she would then start handing out chores. Mine was always dusting and sweeping.
We lived in small military house so the dusting really did not take long, of course in my youthful eyes it felt like an eternity. We used Lemon Pledge on furniture and Endust to sweep the wood floors. I loved the Endust, if you had your socks on you could get a pretty good slide on if you had the courage.
The furniture did not take long excluding one particular piece, the hanging macramé end table in the family living room. I had to be very careful not to knock down the plant balancing every so gracefully on the rounded piece of cut glass hanging in the clutches of the woven table. It was like trying to dust a swing with a bottle of pop sitting on the seat. The plant only fell once in my memory. I felt like a pint-sized failure and was swiftly introduced to the dustpan and a good talking to, by my momma.
Macramé was crazy popular in the seventies.
My fondest memory of dusting was the smell of Lemon Pledge. The lemon scent drifted through the house reminding me of Country Time Lemonade, Lemon Icebox Pie and snow cones, three of my favorites. Of course, I only dream of these things now. The only time I enjoy lemonade is when it is made from actual lemons and sugar but I will eat a snow cone if given the option any time of the day. I have not seen a Lemon Ice Box pie in at least 100 years.
These days we have so many options when we choose to dust our homes, I still use Lemon Pledge from time to time when I feel homesick. But most of the time I just use a feather duster and a microfiber cloth without any spray at all.
Simple Daily Challenge for today: Spend 5 minutes dusting your family room or living room.
