When my youngest son started kindergarten. I immediately offered to help the class by signing up to be a Room Parent. I was looking forward to spending time with my little guy and assist in the school garden and serve cookies and punch at parties and special events.

Our first meeting was in the beautiful setting of the school’s common room. Tables with coffee, hot chocolate, pastries, and fruit were available for the moms and a few days to scarf down while chatting with old friends and meeting the newbies, the Kindergarten moms.

We eventually sat down and received our packets of responsibilities for the school year. The most prominent the Fall Festival, a much loved yearly event that had games, food, a haunted house sponsored by the 5th grade, and raffle baskets from each classroom.

Fall Festival and Gift Basket Theme Ideas

The Fall Festival packet came attached with a list of raffle basket ideas for the classes to choose from; the list dated in a bold letter in August 1998. Apparently, this school uses the same list of basket ideas every year! I thought teachers and parents must be tired of bidding on the same baskets for over a decade!

My room parent partner and I put our heads together and came up with a fresh idea “Not On The List.” The basket beautifully wrapped, featured a prominent gift tag to let folks know each item in the basket. The basket filled to the brim with the latest “scrapbooking tools, papers, and stickers” was a tremendous success. Scrapbooking was the rage in 2009!
A few weeks later, I designed an auction item to raise funds for gift boxes to give to our soldiers in Iraq.

I chose a Disney theme and created a super cute 8×8 book. The scrapbook so the recipient could just simply add photos.

Then an idea hit, I can turn this project into a Disney- Memory Dream Basket! I added an envelope of Disney stickers, journaling cards, some craft markers and pens, and a coffee mug and hot cocoa mix. This allowed the recipient to relax with a cup of cocoa while adding photos and stickers and writing little memory notes of their Disney moments. This basket was a genuine success in the auction. That is when I knew gift baskets are not only thoughtful gifts but really can be fun to make!
