Strawberry Turtle Cottage Cheese Bowl

A Sweet Cottage Cheese Bowl Inspired by an Old-Fashioned Dessert Memory
This Strawberry Turtle Cottage Cheese Bowl is a sweet, high-protein breakfast or dessert bowl inspired by one of my favorite childhood treats.
Years ago, when my family lived in Memphis, my dad would take us to the Walgreens restaurant inside Raleigh Springs Mall. He had recently retired from the Air Force, and we did not have a whole lot of extra money, so going out for a treat felt like a very big deal.
One dessert we loved was called The Turtle. It was huge and made for sharing. I remember scoops of ice cream covered in warm chocolate fudge, butterscotch, and caramel, with bananas, nuts, cookies, and probably a cherry or strawberry situation going on because desserts in the 1970s and early 1980s knew how to show up for a party.
This cottage cheese bowl is my lighter little wink at that memory. It has banana, strawberries, cottage cheese, pecans, chocolate sauce, salted caramel, and a sprig of mint because I always need a little green. The mint also reminds me of my daddy because he always had some growing in the yard.
It is not a perfect turtle shape, my fellow chocolate-loving friend. It is more of a “use your imagination and enjoy the memory” turtle. But it is sweet, fun, full of protein, and special enough to eat for breakfast or share as dessert.

Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Turtle Cottage Cheese Bowl
This bowl is sweet, creamy, fruity, and just a little bit fancy without being fussy. The banana and strawberries make it fresh and naturally sweet, the cottage cheese brings the protein, and the chocolate and salted caramel drizzle give it that old-fashioned dessert feeling. Add a few pecans for crunch and suddenly breakfast feels like it put on lipstick and went out to lunch.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cottage cheese
- 1 banana, sliced
- 5 large strawberries, chopped
- 1 strawberry, halved for the turtle “head” and “tail”
- 2 tablespoons pecans, or a few pecan pieces for the turtle “feet”
- 1 to 2 teaspoons chocolate sauce
- 1 to 2 teaspoons salted caramel sauce
- Fresh mint sprig, optional
Instructions
- Slice the banana and arrange the pieces in the bottom of a shallow bowl or plate. You can make a loose X shape or little “turtle legs” if you want to have fun with it.
- Scoop cottage cheese over the bananas. I like using three small scoops, about ⅓ cup each, for a total of 1 cup cottage cheese.
- Add chopped strawberries around the cottage cheese.
- Place one strawberry half at the front for the turtle’s head and the other half at the back for the tail.
- Add pecan pieces near the banana ends to make little turtle feet.
- Drizzle lightly with chocolate sauce and salted caramel sauce.
- Add a small sprig of mint for color and freshness.
- Serve right away and enjoy.

Sweet Memphis Memories
This bowl is inspired by a dessert my family shared when I was growing up in Memphis. My dad would take us to the Walgreens or Wooldworths restaurant at Raleigh Springs Mall, and ordering a big dessert for the table felt like a real event. It was a very LONG time ago, and I think it may have been a chalkboard special.
The original Turtle dessert was made with ice cream, sauces, nuts, bananas, and all the good gooey things. This version is lighter, but it still gives me that sweet little memory of sitting with my dad, mom, and brother over something special.
I ate this as breakfast, but it could easily be a dessert bowl. If serving it for dessert, you could split it with someone or just enjoy half and save the rest for later.
And no, I would never eat a real turtle. This is just a cute little cottage cheese turtle situation.
P.S. So many of my old Memphis peeps tried to remember which restaurant/ice cream shoppe had the Turtle dessert. If you remember the ice cream at Walgreens or Woolworth back in the day I would love to hear your stories! Comments are read, and I will respond. 🙂
