31 Day Clutter Crusade Day 8

Today is Day 8 of the 31 Day Clutter Crusade and we are working in the closets hunting down outgrown or out-loved coats.   I was looking through photos and thought how I really get attached to the coats my little guys have worn through the years. I still have my oldest son’s tiny little leather pilot jacket which he was kind enough to let his younger brother wear 16 years later!  But alas, I cannot keep all of the coats or I would have to move into a house with a spare coat room and that would just be ridiculous.  But if I did I could keep this cutie Superman Jacket forever and ever! right?

superman coat If you totally love a jacket or coat and it is swimming in memories then take a photo! If it has a button and is quite worn remove the button and start a little memory jar. I have a memory jar for each person in my family.

Coats can take up a whole lot of real estate in a closet and every month when you pay the rent or house note that is precious real estate you are paying for!

How to Declutter Coats

Let’s Begin:
  • Keep it – Keep the coat or jacket if you are still wearing it or if it can be handed down to the next child in your immediate family. If there are several years of a gap, like my boys, then consider the style before decided to keep the item.
  • Toss it- If it is beyond mending then toss it into the garbage bag! Unless it has more memories than say the baby albums or your wedding photos!  Remember, we are freeing up real estate in our closets.
  • Donate it- If the coat or jacket is still quite wearable then donate it to a family you know could use it, to a battered women’s shelter or other charity, like the Salvation Army.  I know that our church collects coats each fall for the homeless and are very much-needed.
That is it! Time for a cup of tea and put your feet up moment!

Give me the discipline to get rid of the stuff that’s not important, the freedom to savor the stuff that gives me joy, and the patience not to worry about the stuff that’s messy but not hurting anybody.”

  1. Wow, I am very impressed that you’re taking on this challenge! De-cluttering is definitely something I need to force myself to do- throwing things away is hard for me, but feels great once I do it.

    1. I enjoy a clean slate, lol. Some things are worth the spece, for example my ribbon collection. Some things do not deserve the space, socks with holes. lol

  2. Just last week I went through my coats and found three to donate. I haven’t worn them in two seasons. Time to go. Thanks for sharing your tips. Visiting from SITS.

    1. I would do the math on how much space you saved but this time change has my brain on mom-fuzz. But, I do know that the space of 2 coats can holf 6 summer shirts!
